I love what I do!
Notice how I didn’t say I love my job? I don’t really call what I do a job but it is a career and it is what I am passionate about.
When you enjoy what you do as much as I do it really doesn’t feel like work or a “job”. To catch you up-to-speed, I haven’t collected a regular paycheck in nearly 3 years.
It’s freeing and exciting to wake up and do what you love every day but it is not without its challenges. I won’t get into that today but it’s important to remember that.
On Saturday I met Ben.
Ben is a life-long Rider fan living in Edmonton. He grew up in Saskatchewan but hasn’t lived in the province, or been to a game I’m Regina since he left in his late 20’s. His journey took him all over the country before settling in Edmonton.
Ben is 92-years-old. He walks with little help from his cane but also has the chair for moving around long distances. He wanted to stand for our conversation but I insisted we sit and relax.
We spoke for 15 minutes and I learned all about his journey from Swift Current, Saskatchewan through various parts of Canada and finally ending up in Edmonton, Alberta. Throughout it all he remained deeply connected to Rider Nation.
We had a great conversation and even did a short interview for “In The Huddle”, which will air today and tomorrow across Saskatchewan.
I told him that I hoped the Riders would win that day since he made the trip all the way to see the new stadium. Do you know what his response was? He told me it wasn’t that important. He said it’s just a game and there will be plenty more. He was just happy to be there.
The Riders won anyway.
Meeting great people, like Ben, is the best part of what I get to do every day and I wouldn’t trade it for anything!
By-the-way, Ben is going to be celebrating his 65th wedding anniversary in November. Incredible.
Thank you for the conversation and I look forward to the next great person I get to meet.
The hat Ben is holding is from 1994, I believe. It is signed by just about everyone including Don Narcisse, Bobby Jurasin and Cal Murphy. Those guys and the early-to-mid 90’s are when I started going to the games and watching the Riders play.
